At a meeting of the directors of the Hokitika Gas Company yesterday, it was disclosed that the half-year ended on 31st. inst. had been a satisfactory one, the consumption of gas for the period being actually a record. It is proposed to declare an interim dividend of 2s 6d per share for the halfyear. During the period further improvements to tne gas service had been made, involving a large outlay. The works and plant were reported to be in greatly improved order.

Henry Tucker was killed on Thursday as a result of blasting operations in connection with work on the’Summit Road between the Kiwi and Gebbie’s Pass, 'iucker, who was a single man, a native of Ireland, was employed on relief works. Until recently he had resided at Clarence Road, Riecarton. He has ino known relatives in New Zealand, me a cident occurred at about 3 p.m,. during smoko, when Tucker was struck on the head by a piece of rock and killed instantly.
What should be the penalty on a man 72 years of age, who dives into a fresh water swimming bath on a cold day in order to open the season? That question was humorously discussed at yesterday’s meeting of the Court of Directors of the Royal Humane Society, after the president, Canon W. S. Bean, had been congratulated on this feat, which took place last Saturday. The president said that as it was so cold, he was the only one to swim at Addington and lie thought tne feat deesrved a gold medal. said a member. “I’ll move a . rote of censure on the president for risking his life,” Laugningly, Mr Bean was putting the motion to the meeting when he was stopped by Mr Nicholson on a point of order, as the motion had not been seconded. The comedy concluded at this stage, for the time of commencing the annual meeting had arrived.

The winding-up meeting df All Saints Young Men’s Institute, was held,at the Parish Hall last evening, the Vicar (ltevd. Nelson Wright) presiding. The principal business was the prepared elocutionary competition among the Club members. The subject chosen being “ Heroes.” The following compete ed—Mr J. Richards, “Captain Oates”-; Mr E. Heeiiah, “ Roald Amundsen,f ■ Mr C. Wright, “Lord Nelson,” and Mr W. Rowe “Professor Curie” (the discoverer of radium). Air D, J. Evans, who was adjudicator, placed Mr Rowe 1, and Air Heenan 2, and volumes of travel by Captain Scott and the pictorial tour of Scott’s expedition by Pouting, were presented to the two competitors placed first and second. Mr Evans gave a short address reviewing the competitions and the.subjects rendered and expressed the hope it would be possible next season to introduce similar competitions among the members and secure a wider display.
