A notice appears in this issue relative to Armistice Day on Monday next. A solemn silence of two minutes shall he observed and all vehicular traffic will he suspended during that period.
The premises of Messrs F. C. Schroder and Co., drapers of Revell Street, were broken into some time on Tuesday night last. Entrance was effected by breaking a window of a lavatory in the rear of the building. Though some articles of ladies apparel were disturbed, there was nothing apparently missing. Exit was made by the back door.
Tho concert and ball at Kanieri Public Hall on Wednesday night next is the .next attraction. The school children assisted by leading Hokitika talent will present one of the best concerts of recent years while for tho hall to follow Ross’ Orchestra will supply the music. As the function is for the purpose of providing prizes for Kanieri State School scholars the concert and ball is worthy of every patronage.
Arrangements are in hand for placing another 50 men on the great south road works from Weheka. Obis is an indication that the Government intend to prosecute the construction of the road, definitely, and the action will be appreciated greatly by all interested in the progress of South Westland. The District Engineer (Mr Johnston) is visiting the southern district in connection with the advancement of the work.
The Commissioner of Taxes draws tne attention of taxpayers to the notification appearing in to-day’s issue that the due date of payment of Ordinary Land-tax for the current year is on Thursday, the 2Lst day of November. 1929, and that the demands will lie posted on or about the Bth. day of November. The due date for payment of Special Land-tax is the 28th. day of February, 1930, and demands will be posted on or about the 21st. day of February, 1930.

The fees for the month amounted to £BB 13s 2d. At the Magistrate’s 00111!;, Westport, John Bennett, of Stockton, was charged with the theft of £3 15° from the Bullor Earthquake Relief Com mitt™. .For the orosoeution, Detective March stated ..that in Jnlv RonnoH., who is married . with: five children, was secretary for the Stockton Corhmittee. Two men were engaged on relief work, and accused made it appear that they hod workeisht clays instead of six. He .. ob ; ' tained the money from the Millerton Committee, but retained £3 16s. and forged the receipts. The money had been refunded. Accused saicl that at the time they had no tools, and no authority to purchase any. He supplied tools for the men. Magistrate Meldrum said accused had had a. previous conviction. He would take into consideration the fact that Bennett was married, with five children. He ordered him to come up for sentence within twelve months, if called upon. He is to report to the police monthly.
