COMMENT ON CUP RACE

(Australian Press Association)

(Received this day at 10 a.in.)

SYDNEY, November 6

The “ Herald,” commenting on the -Melbourne Cup, says the, race was a veritable triumph tor‘‘New Zealand, the placed horses being bred in the Dominion.

There were remarkable scenes of enthusiasm from and fortythousand who witnessed the race, from the time Nightmarch passed Rhar Lap in the straight until the rider dismounted after a most convincing victory. Rhar Lap practically heat himself. The pace was so slow early, that his rider found it impossible to retain him and Phar Lap pulled himself to the front much tcfiv soon. He was lighting for his head from the outset. Paquito made a .wonderful run to secure second place. He was not prominent until the last three furlongs were entered.

Upon taking control at the distance, Nightmarch cleared fight .away and won in a convincing manner, placing him on the same high rung of the ladder as Windbag. The win was a complete vindication of the horsemanship of the New Zealander, Roy Reed. Tho importance of,the event did not affect Reed in the slightest.' bile, kept , his mount going remarkably/ 'High Syce ran a good race and’was not xlisgrneed with his heavy weight. Some Quality Y s doing his best at the finish. Taisho was tired and. Wina'ot beat- only two horses home. -,

lhe “Telegraph” says Nightmarch has proved himself one of the best horses that has ever left New-Zealand, Tins is saying a great deal/ Carbine and Limerick are among this company. Phar Lap was. beaten but not disgraced. The battle between hoise and rider could scarcely have been helpful to the Derby winner. -

NIGHTMARCH’S winnings. (Received this-dn-v fit 1.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 6. Paquito is returning to New Zealand on Friday. . Phar Lap cantered at Caulfield today. He looks well. Nightmarch’s stake winnings total £21,384 sterling.
