THE COUNCIL

WELLINGTON, November 6. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. The Arms Amendment Bill was considered in committee and progress was reported. The Council rose at 5.5 p.m. WELLINGTON, November 6. The Legislative Council met at 10.3,7

a.m. The Railways Authorisation Bill was received from the House and read a first 1 - time. The Council adjourned at 10.35 a.m.

THE HOUSE. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m. The Cinematograph Films Amendment Bill was introduced and read a first time.

The afternoon was spent considering local bills, two of which were put through all stages and passed.

When the Railways Authorisation Bill came before the Flouse, the Leader of the Opposition moved an amendment to the second reading—That while the House did not desire to obstruct the authorisation proposed in the bill, it was of the opinion that a (full inquiry should immediately be made into the whole question of railway construction, more especially in view of the emphatic statement in the Budget that railway losses must rapidly increase,, unless some co-ordination is arranged between motor transport and railways.

Tho amendment was defeated by 42 to 25.

The Bill went through all stages and was passed unamended. The House rose at 3 a.m. WELLINGTON, Nov. 6. The House of Representatives mot at 11a.m.

The Tran sport Law Amendment Bill was reported, from the Select Committee, with the recommendation that .it be allowed to proceed. Hon. AY. A. V eiteh stated it was intended, in view of the opposition to many sections of the Bill, to proceed only with the clauses providing for the constitution of the Transport Department and the appointment of a Minister of Transport. The report was laid on the table.

The House of Representatives, fin the recommendation off the Goldfields and Mines Committee, a large number of reports on petitions relating to miners’ phthisis were referred to the Government for most favourable consideration.
