MAGISTRATE’S COURT

GREYMOUTH, Nov. 5. A well-dressed married woman, whose name was subsequently suppressed, appeared in custody before. Mr W. Meld rum, S.M., at the Greymouth Court yesterday, and was charged that, on October 311, she obtained credit to the extent of £5, by fraud. She pleadecl not guilty. She was also charged with obtaining liquor on October 31 during the currency of a prohibition order, and with a similar offence on November 2, pleaded guilty to both charges. Senior-Sergeant C. E. Roach stated' that accused went to a Grevmouth garage, gave an incorrect name, and said that her mother was seriously iU at Dunedin, and she wanted to hire a car to take her to Otira to catch the train. Cars were not hired out at the garage, but the . proprieto" rang up a taxi-driver, who took the woman to Otira, the fare being quoted as £5. On arrival at Otira, accused said she had no money, but that she had paid the garage proprietor £4, and that the remaining £1 would ho paid in a fortnight. The garage proprietor, however, knew nothing about the £4, and nothing had been paid. The S.M. convicted accused on the charge of fraud, and ordered her io come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months, also ffhat £5 bo paid to the taxi-driver and 10s each to the two witnesses. She was also convicted on the other two chaiges, and, on the ground that she is an habitual inebriate, was committed with her consent, to the Salvation Army Home at Christchurch for tAvo years.
