RELIEF SCHEME
SOME UNFAVOURABLE CRITICISM.
(By Telegraph—Press Association), PALMERSTON N., Nov. -1. A statement that the latest leliet scheme for the absorption, of unemployed had an unsettling effect on boys following definite vocations, and prejudicial on those learning trades, was made by mill owners. Boys oi seventeen who obviously bad not reached full earning capacity, wore obtaining relief work at men’s late of pay. He said eight had left last week. It was a double tax on industry, while farmings were calling out for labour. It was stated the youths made a declaration cl unemployment. Apparently no effective steps were taken to verify the facts or ascertain when they wore discharged. Not only were the fundamental principles of the relief scheme being defeated but the conditions bad an unsettling effect of other youths engaged in permanent vocations.
