LONDON, November 2. Strenuous elforts on the part of Labourites to secure control of local government were again a feature olf the municipal elections in three hundred of the cities and* boroughs in England and Wales 'excluding London), in which the polling took place yesterday. The results that were available early this morning show that there are substantial La .cur gains, though these are not so sweeping as they were anticipated to -prove. Latest gains and losses are as follows :

Several Mayors have lost their seats to Labourites, including the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, and the Mayors of Sunderland and Guilford. Labour already rules in twenty-three towns? but Labour lias now secured majorities on the councils for the first time in Bradford and Northampton.

The Communist candidates fared badly, their candidates at Burnley only polling twenty-seven votes, at Bury sixty-seven, and at Leeds fiftyfour and seventy-two. The Conservatives in Oldham won back three seats from Labour. The total of candidates for the countryside was 2031. The Labour ites bad the largest number returned unopposed, namely 117, compared with the Conservatives’ eighty-one, Independents’ thirty-five.

MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. (Received this dav at 8 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 3. Revised figures for the municipal elections are:— Conservatives 11 gains, 76 losses. Liberal 13 gains, 29 losses. Labour 112 gains, 12 losses. Independent 16 gains, 32 losses.
