A LIVELY MEETING
AUCKLAND, Nov. 1. Lively .exchanges marked a meeting of the Te Archa Borough Council. The Mayor called the meeting to order several times and finally restored order by sharply rebuking Councillor AY.' C. Kennedy and Councillor J. Cotter. The first sign of trouble came when Councillor Kennedy protested against an application on behalf of a grocei for a building permit. The work, said Councillor Kennedy, had been carried out by Mr Pease, a member, of the council who was now apply ing for a permit two months aftei the building was completed. Had another builder been the culprit, said Councillor Kennedy he would have been hung. Councillor Cotter suggested that thr council was making fish of one and flesh of another. Warm exchanges followed and Councillor Kennedy came to the fort again when the Mayor requested confirmation of the appointment of a typist. Recalling that applicants had been requested to send portraits, Councillor Kennedy said, “This is a silly and unfair practice which puts applicants to all sorts of trouble and expense. It serves no good purpose. If a borough council is judging a beauty ■contest portraits are quite all right.”
