Sherlock Holmes, the famous detective of fiction, smoked “black siiair. and derived inspiration from it "lie" puzzling over some problem of extraordinary toughness. But shag is to strong for many smokers. It contains .too much nicotine, and nicotine is r bad thing. Habitual use of such tobacco is bound sooner or later to affect the health. Unfortunately the imported tobaccos are all loaded u it] nicotine. And that’s where they differ from our Now Zealand-grown varieties. These latter are all toasted. That’s why they arc so pure and so comparatively free from nicotine. The toasting also accounts for theii beautiful flavour and aroma. There’s no bite in them, and they may be smoked as freely as you please with perfekt safety. There are half-a-dozen brands, more or less. Firs! favourites: Riverhead Gold is sweet and mild: Navy Cut, a choice medium; Cavendish, also medium, is the sportsman’s choice; and Cut Plug Nc 10, a fine rich full-flavoured sort. They are exclusively manufactured hv the National Tobacco Co., Ltd., (pioneers of the N.Z. tobacco industry). —Advt.

CARRIED OUT TO SEA, BRIGHTON, September 18. The dramatic story of his elevenhours adventure with a 14-feet yawl in the Channel was told to me to-day by Fleming Burleigh, aged 19, a school boy, of Orient-place, Brighton. Fleming and Vincent Penfold, another schoolboy landed at 1.10 a.m. while the Brighton lifeboat was still searching for them. The yawl belongs to the boys. Fleming said: We left Brighton at 2..'J0 yesterday, reached Worthing by four o’clock, and started back an hour later, when the wind suddenly dropped. We were absolutely becalmed. We found that 0.. e tide was carrying us out to sea, and rowed with all our strength. We gradually drifted farther into the Channel and when darkness fell we were still trying to reach the shore. AVe could see the land and the lights in the distance. It was about ten o’clock when we got near Shoreham. Meanwhile an onshore wind had sprung up. Slowly we beat our way towards Brighton. AVe saw the rockets go up for the liftboat and knew that people were searching for us. AVlien we reached the shore we were very tired, but we both feel quite fit now. The liftboat did mot return to Brighton until 4.30 a.m.
