“SPEAKEASIES.”

M. CLEMENTKL’S COMMISSION (United Press Association—By ElectricTelegraph.—Copyright.) PARTS, Oct. 30. The early guesses that because M. Briand waited on the President,- he had been entrusted with the formation of a Ministry, were soon falsified by tlio summoning of M. Clemente!, whom M. B ria nd recommended. M. Clemen tel ventured to prophesy: “I shall either succeed, or fail very quickly!” It is regarded as certain that he will induce M. Briand to accept the portfolio of Foreign Affairs in a Concentration Cabinet. • M. Clemen tel has previously held portfolios in 1905 and 1913-1914. He also participated in three of the War Time Emergency Cabinets.

WHAT PRESSMEN DISCOVERED. WASHINGTON, Oct. 30. Three “Times” reporters were sent out. by the City editor of the paper to investigate the liquor conditions. They published, in the first person, their •stories, saving that they had easily purchased liquor in forty-nine “Speakeasies.” The Grand Jury took up the matter, but the trio of journalists refused to violate the ethics of their profession by testifying the names and addresses where they bought the drinks. Judge Gordon, of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia, sentenced the reporters to forty-live days’ imprisonment for contempt of court.
