CRUELTY ALLEGED
AN INVERCARGILL CASE. INVERCARGILL/ October 25. Allegations of continued cruelty and neglect were made in tho Police Court tins morning before Mr W. H. Wood ward, S.M., when Arthur Robert Blondell, of Waimatua, was charged with assaulting his nephew, a youth of sixteen, named George Henry Tweedaie. Accused, who was represented by Mr Gordon Reed, pleaded not guilty. In opening the case, Senior-Sergeant Fox said that the facts to he proved were shortly aS follow : The youth al leged to he assaulted was sixteen yearold and waft a nephew of the accused He-.intended to show evidence tha J the hoy, who for two years had been living with the accused, had beer roughly treated. Following on the alleged assault, the boy had cleared oui He had called on a Mrs Murdoch. He had little clothing on then, and appeared to have been knocked about. The next day he had been found work with a Mr Shirley, and had been there since. Accused had sought out the police shortly afterwards, and made r statement, in which-he said that he could give no reason why the boj should clear out. Accused had giver him l a good character, and had said that he had been well treated. The defence was a denial of the charges and the suggestion was made that complainant’s injuries had been received as a result of falling from a cart. The case was. 'adjourned till November 2 for purposes- of hearing further evidence.
