KAHIEA’S CREW. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) GISBORNE, Oct. 30. Some difficulty is understood to have arisen in connection with the'Kahika’s crew; in regard to rates of pay to be received the voyage to Wellington, An examination of the Kahika’s hull disclosed that the vessel was sound and seaworthy, but owing to the . loss’of two blades of the propellor, the vessel will be unable to make the trip to Wellington, and will be taken in toy by the tug Terawhiti. • AN INQUEST. V. FOXTON, October 30. The 'inquest into the death of Harold Wadsworth, railway porter, of Wellington, who was killed on the Sandon road on Monday as a result of the skid of a motor cycle he was riding throwing him against a following car, the Coroner returned a verdict of death due to Wadsworth being acicdentally run into by a car driven by W. E. Warren through the cycle skidding in theToose metal. RESIDENCE DESTROYED INVERCARGILL; Oct-. 28, . A farmer’s newly completed residence was totally destroyed by .fire on Saturday, night. At midnight or shortly before, a blaze broke out in Mr Alexander Waddell’s property at Waikaka Valley. Little could be dono to combat the outbreak and the house was razed to the ground. SOUTHLAND FIRE. INVERCARGILL, Oct. 29. There was an outbreak of fire on Monday .evening in a six-roomed house at Underwood, owned by. the New Zealand Milk Products Ltd., and occupied by William Brighton. It resulted in the complete destruction of the residence. The owner was absent at the time, and the origin of the fire is a mystery. There was no insurance on the contents, and the owner estimates the loss at several hundred pounds. The valuable work of a bucket brigade prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining premises, although the wall of the house next door, occupied by J. R. VALUELESS CHEQUES. , HAMILTON, OctoW 30. Charles Mozart Spinley, middle-aged., was sentenced at Hamilton to-day to six months imprisonment for obtaining money here by' means of a valueless cheque. He awaits trial on three similar alleged offences, at Rotorua; He had previously been convicted of forgery, false pretences, theft, and passing of'counterfeit coins. He awaits trial on a charge of a false declaration to obtain a marriage certificate at Auckland. \ ,

Simmond’s Spartan aeroplane piloted by Captain White, arrived from Christohurc hthis morning, after a two and three-quarter hours trip. A JURY'S DECISION. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 30. An unusual, position arose at, the Supreme Court when a case .against William Wallace Clifford, charged with allegedly breaking and entering premises with intent to commit a crime, was concluded this morning. The jury’s verdict was guilty of breaking and entering., His Honour, Justice Blair, asked the foreman if the jury intended to, indicate the accused was not guilty of any intent to commit a crime, and he replied in the affirmative. His Honour commented that the answer constituted, in effect, a verdict of not guilty to the charge in the indictment and it would have to be viewed in that manner. In dis harging the accused His Hon>ur said that although the jury have found you guilty of breaking and enthat is not a crime in the criminal calender. You were charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime. The verdict amounts in effect to one of not guilty to the charge.
