NEW STEAMERS

LONDON, October 20. Two sister vessels to the motor, mail, passenger and cargo liner Ilangitikei, of about 17,000 tons gross, which was built if or the New Zealand Shipping. Company by Messrs J. Brown and Co., Ltd., of Clydebank, and delivered last February, are to be completed before the end of the year. 1 bey are named respectively the Rnngitoto and the Rangitane. Although contracts have not yet boon signed, the New Zealand Shipping Company proposes to place orders also shortly for three large motor cargo liners for its services between this country and New Zealand, via the Panama Canal. The vessels are to be 470 ft long, with a beam of 67ft, and a moulded depth of the upper deck of 40ft, and they are to have a carrying capacity df 1 ‘2,000 tons dead weight. It is understood that contracts for two of the vessfels are likely to be placed with Messrs Alexander Stephen and Sons, Ltd., Linthouse,. Glasgow, and that these vessels will have motor engines of the Sul/.ar type. The contract for the third ship, which will have motor engines of the Doxford opposed piston type, is likely to be secured by Vickers-Armstrong, Ltd. The ships are to have a brake horse-power of 8000

and a service speed of about fifteen knots. The vessels will be fitted with large refrigerated space for the carriage of New Zealand mutton.
