A question that is causing much interest in Ashburton at present is that of licensed houses. It is about 26 years since the hotels in the district closed their bars, which they have not reopened since. Consequently a great deal depends on the decision of the Court, which is now giving consideration to the application concerning the Somerset Hotel, wliich was brought as a test case. Should this be granted, the decision will involve the fate of three other hotels in the borough. These are the Commercial, the Central, and Devaine’s. 'The Ashburton Men’s Club and Mutual Society of Arts, whose membership is restricted to 300,1 is at present the only place within the district where liquor may be obtained, legally of course.
