The alterations to the racing track at the Hokitika racecourse are now practically complete. The new starting post for the six-furlong events is now in a newly-made “ straight,” thus avoiding the corner where the start had hitherto to be made. The judge’s box has been moved to its new situation, and the track generally has been put in first class order.

The following passage appeared in the Christchurch “ Times ”. yesterday: A lot of people intending to take advantage of the excursion to Hokitika are doomed to disappointment through waiting until the last minute before purchasing tickets. This policy does not give the committee, an opportunity of arranging a second train. Get busy, and buy your ticket right away, and reserve your seat, The committee has decided to send an advance agent to Hokitika to finalise arrangements for the various trips and arrange for comfort of the passengers whilst there.

There was a touch of irony, says the Westport “Times,” in an episode which occurred at Charleston on Tuesday. Members of the Hospital Board were out viewing some property and on the way back one of the members was inadvertently left behind. His plight was not realised until the two cars reached Addisons, when one car put back in search of the missing member. The member concerned, having very strong views on the suitability o'f canvas shoes for walking, had found ordinary boots very trying and was keen to accept a lift by a passing lorry. When he .was eventually picked up by his fellow members of the Hospital Board he was far from joining in what was considered a good joke.
