The total coal' produced to December 31, 1927; was 91;1fi7 .tans', and the total, to December, r 31; i 928,; reached' 188,691 tons, . The outut.fbr one day recently reached; the satisfactory total of 827 tons. Buring the past' year only seven Working days were lost through labour troubles. The number of employees is now .approximately 320. _ .; .' ;
' Mr H. A. Young, S.M., had a someth at exciting time when, a few nights ago, at his residence in Cashmere Road, Cashmere, Christchurch, he caught a burglnri Mr Young was in bed when his son told him that there was a stranger in the garden. On going out, Mr Young failed to find anybody, and went back to bed. His son, not satised with the search, kept watch. He Woke Mr Young and told him thafthere was a- man near the gate. Standing behind a tree near the verandah, Mr Young saw the man walk forward on a strip of grass, evidently to avoid being heard. When about twenty feet from the house, the man took off his boots. v He advanced in his socks towards the [louse, which was in darkness. Mr Young rushed at him and caught him. Mr Young’s son, who has taken lessons in jiu-jitsu, operated on the man’s arms in the recognised style, and forced him on to the floor.of the verandah. He Was thrown face downwards, and Mr, Young sat upon him and held his arms, in case he carried a revolve!’, until the police, who were telephoned for, arrived.'"';
