The crowded programme at the recent Competitions necessitated the omission of the playette section. The St. Paul’s amateurs having prepared three senior and a junior playette, have decided to present them in the Princess Theatre on Thursday, Nov. 7th., when their patrons may. anticipate a night of merriment and laughter. They are also visiting Ross on Friday next.

About one hundred men are now employed on the first eighteen miles of the Jnangahua-Murchison road. . Work is also being pushed ahead at the Murchison end of the highway. An authority for £6OO has been received by the District Engineer for the erection of Deep Gully bridge, on the Maruia-Murchison road. The piles are driven, and as soon as the hardwood comes to hand the superstructure will be' proceeded with.

Some people are never stuck, they always find some way out of a difficulty. A Palmerston North farmer, however, must have created something of a record when confronted recently with the task of getting home a valuable yearling Friesian heifer which had strayed some miles .from his property. How he accomplished the first part is not known. Suffice it to sav. that his sedan car was seen going down the main street of the town with the Friesian in the back seat, its tail sticking out of one window and its head out of the other.

“ The settlement of the land is still taking place, and it will go on for about 18 months,” said Mr H. F. Skey, referring to slight earthquake shocks felt occasionally. “One could hardly expect them to die off suddenly after such a big disturbance,” said Mr Skey, “ and it will probably be eighteen months before the seat of the disturbance settles down completely.” No shocks were recorded yesterday, and only a very few have been recorded at the Magnetic Observatory during the past month. All were slight and were not felt by the general public.

Three tenders were received by the Grey County Council for cartage of cement and other material for bridges between Rapahoe and Punakaiki. That of D. Ryall, being the lowest, has been recommended to the Highways Board for acceptance. It has been decided to establish telegraphic communication along the coastal road. The work will be put in hand at an early date. The bridge building gang which was engaged erecting the bridge at Wilierscroft Farm, on the Maruia river, on the Inangahua-Maruia road, has been moved to the coastal road, where a start will be made at once with the erection of the bridge across the Pororari river.

A motor lorry owned and driven, by Mr Stewart Kerr, who was accompanied by two others when ascending the Blackball Hill to the Ngahere Road, ran off the road last evening, falling thirty feet into a gully. The lorry was badly damaged in the fall and completed its destruction by catching fire. The three occupants fortunately escaped injury. ’ . - v

The death is reported from Wanganui on Wednesday night of Mr Frederick Howard, formerly a well-known dairyman at South Hokitika,, which took place after a short illness. The deceased had been a resident of Woodlands farm on the Arthurstown road for a long period only retiring from active operations a few years ago. He married again some months ago. He was a native of Berkshire, England, and 75 years of age. Deceased leaves a widow and family of three daughters (Mrs S. Austin, of Reefton, Mrs G. Warden, of Wanganui, Mrs B. Topp, of Mawheraiti) and three sons (Mr H. Howard, of Western Australia, Mr C. Howard, of Wanganui, and Mr F. Howard, of South Hokitika) and two adopted sons (Mr G, Gallop, of Wanganui, and Mr Fred Gallop, of Hokitika). The funeral took place this afternoon at Wanganui.
