HIRE PURCHASE SYSTEM
amendment of law proposed. AUCKLAND, Oct. 15/ Statements that it was the custom of a certain motor-car corporation to supply dealers with cars on hire-pur-chase were made by members of the Chambers of Commerce Conference today, .when the following remit from the Grey mouth Chamber was considered :— * • / ‘(That the Conference urges the amendment of ..the. Chattels Transfer Act, 1924, by making Section 57 of the Act (relating to customary hire purchase agreements) applicable only to dealings between a dealer and a customer, that W'a person acquiring a chattel for use, and not for the' purpose of resale.’.’ • : An amendment .in more explicit terms was brought forward on behalf of the New Plymouth Chamber. This specified that the desired change applied. to goods supplied to a retailer in the ordinary course of his business for sale by him. One” delegate said that in a recent instance a dealer defaulted, and the corporation seized a number of cars which customers had obtained from him. Some of these ears had been paid far outright’ and until their seizure the purchasers knew nothing of the hire-purchase agreements between the/dealer and the corporation. The remit and amendment were referred to the executive for consideration.
