VALUELESS CHEQUES

BROADCASTED IN SOUTHLAND. By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 16. John Cable Ford, aged 29 years, pleaded guilty to twelve charges, of obtaining money by means of valueless cheques, in the Police Court this corning.

Detective Sergeant Hewitt said that iccured had opened an account on one of the local banks some years ago. He had operated on that account, but knew that it had nearly expired. In 'ompany with a lad of 17 years, he had obtained a car from a local firm, and had gone on a tour of Southland, ''roadcasting valueless cheques. He had finally made his way to Sydney, where he had given himself lip. As tlie complainants were not then in a position to pay the co.st of transport, accused was released. He stowed away on a coat and landed in Auckland, where he was arrested and brought to Liver argill.

Counsel for accused said lie had had liquor when the valueless cheques were passed. Restitution would he made to all who had been defrauded. The Magistrate deferred sentence until to-morrow,
