HIGHWAYS SUBSIDY

HAWKE’S BAY COMPLAINT. 'By Telegraph—Press Association), WELLINGTON, October 15. With regard to a Napier telegram complaining as to the highways subsidy for the Hawke’s Bay County, it was stated, in a statement on behalf of the Highways Board to-day, that in view of the figures supplied by the Board, the figures £2,050, must he a mistake in telegraphing. The Board had approved of an amount of £21,0.72 for expenditure in the Hawke’s Bay County out of the revenue fund during the financial year 1929-30." Further, in the case of the Construction Fund, it was recommending the provision of £28,176, thus making a total of £49,278. Owing to the fact that the County and Board were in a position to accelerate the works under the heading of surfacing adjacent to the large centres of population, on the introduction of the petrol tax, a. £75,000 scheme over a five year period was scheduled. Last year the Board had expended £26,135, and this year provision was being made for £22,702, thus making £49,000 out of the £75,000 in two years.

It is further pointed out that, whereas for the Hawke’s {Bay district; £58,872 was expended out of the Rev--enue Fund last year, the Board had approved of works this v year Involving an expenditure of approximately £103,000.
