RED CROSS WORK
At the meeting of the British Red Cross Society at Christchurch on Monday, Sister Christian, who is engaged on Peace (Tune work, reported that the course of instruction in the South. Westland District would be completed by the first week in October. She had arranged for transport as her car was again out of action. She asked that a letter of thanks be sent to the Rev. E. A. Osmers, who had materially assisted her. The written examination of the classes had been arranged for October 7, . the public school teachers having been asked to supervise. Sickness had affected the numbers entering for examinations. •• Arrangements would be made for Matron Lloyd to be taken to Harihari and Wailio at a later date for the examinations.
Sister Christian hoped to start organising Ross and Ruatapu early in October. Junior Red Cross literature bad been sent to the schools at Harihari, Wataroa, Waiho and Pukekura, and she would visit each school and endeavour to get circles started before leaving the district. At the request of the school teacher at Wataroa she had visited the school to diagnose several .eases of rash that had broken out among the children. She had prescribed the necessary treatment and had also visited' the homes to see that it was carried out. She had visited a sick soldier who was suffering from the effects of shell shock and a wound on his head. He was unable to work, having spent most of his time in hospital. His pension had been stopped, and both he and his family were suffering in consequence. It was decided to make further enquiries with the view to obtaining relief. A letter was received from headquarters office referring to the excellent work being done by Sister Christian on the West Coast. It was resolved that a copy of the letter be sent to Sister Christian. It was decided that summary of the districts covered by nurses doing peace time work 'in Canterbury and Westland be prepared for the next meeting of the executive.
