600 APPLICATIONS. ■ (Bv Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. In an interview the M.nister of Defence stated to-day that, when recently the Defence Department publicly advertised for aircraftsmen, and aircraft apprentices for the Air Force, the number of vacancies to be filled was unfortunately not mentioned in the advertisement.

“To-day,” the Minister said: “We have already received over COO applications, and the number of vacancies to be filled is twenty-one. These consist of fifteen for cadet mechanics: three for fitters (aero engine); one foi a metal rigger, and two for rigger.(aero).”

He added:—“Applications are stili pouring in.” Every day I am receiving telegrams and letters asking me to hplp young men to enter the Force. I think it is time that the public should know that there are 600 applications •in and only twenty-one positions to be filled. I would like to say also that the selection of those who are to fill the vacancies will only be approved by me qfter the Director of Air Services (Wing Commander Grant Dalton), has made recommendation.”

The Minister added that when applications were recently called for ten men for Sockburn Aerodrome, the Department had to close down, as four hundred ockl applications were received right away.
