WEEK-END ACCIDENTS'. By Telegraph—Press Asbd., Copyright. WELLINGTON, October 14. The Free Ambulance was kept busy over the week-end conveying sufferers to the hospital. In all cases but one motor vehicles were concerned. Oscar W. Berkland, crane attendant, of Lower Hutt, is lying in hospital with severe injuries to the head, the result of an alleged assault for which a man was arrested. DEATH OF LADY RHODES. CHRISTCHURCH, October 14. Obituary.—Lady Rhodes, wife of Sir Heaton Rhodes, alfter a short illness. DROWNING FATALITY. BLENHEIM, Odiober 14. A young’ man, W. Trowern, an employee of M. Harte, storekeeper, at Rai Valley, was drowned yesterday while bathing at Pel'orus bridge. OLD SETTLER PASSES. BLENHEIM, October 14. Obituary.—Joshua Brown Rayner, aged 78. He arrived at Port Chalmers in 1861 and settled in Blenheim with his parents in 1865. Later, he entered a partnership in the wool and skin business. He was associated with the Marlborough Racing Club sirice its inception, and was one of the earliest menibers of the Wairau River Board and the Wairau. Licensing Committee.

WELLINGTON, October 14.
The view expressed in the cable news, that Antarctic whaling is being overdone, is more or less confirmed from a financial point of view’ by the masters of two of the big whaling steamers here. They do not, however, give any opinion on the probability Of the extermination of tne. whales. ’One declared there had been no 'diminution in the number in the successive voyages. The Norwegian Government, it ippears, is alive’ to the danger apd has sent an 1 inspector on. board the Sir James Clark Ross steamer ,to see that the regulations are strictly , observed. Immature ■ animals and Cow whales with calves are not to be killed. Every portion of the carcase must be utilised.' BODY FOUND IN RIVER
TAUMARTJNUI,, October 14/
The body of H. Collins, a labourer, about forty-five years, was found ini the river at Ohura yesterday. From appearance the body had been in the water for several days. Collins has not been working since he came out of the Taumnrunui Hospitnl, where he was treated for an injured foot. He was to commence work again this week.
PORT CHARGES REDUCED.
CHRISTCHURCH, October 14,
The Lyttelton Harbour Board at a special meeting decided to reduce the> part charges by a total of £14,795 annually, so that traders would benefit. The Chairman announced the Board had a credit balance 6f £8,304 in cash and was embarrassed not by financial difficulties but by surplus.
A REMAND
WELLINGTON, Oct. 14
Henry Norman Hansen, charged with assaulting Berkland, was remanded till Wednesday.
SERIOUS CHARGES
HAWERA, 14
Lawrence James Sales, aged 29, single, pleaded not guilty in the Court this morning, and was committed for trial on the alleged commission of an unnatural offence, and three indecent assaults on boys.
ASSAULT CHARGE,
AUCKLAND. Oct. 14
Doctor Balder Singh Share, a wellknown Indian medical, practitioner, who has been practising in Auckland for many years was arrested before noon to-day on a charge of having on Sept. 26th., indecently assaulting a woman aged 23. Charged with the offence at the Police Court, accused was remanded on £SO) bail, till Oct. 21st.
TOWN HALL DESTROYED
TAUMARANUT, Oct. 12
The Maitere Town Hall was destroyed by fire early this morning, and difficulty was experienced in saving the adjoining Post Office. The cause of the fire is a mystery. The hall was insured for £2CO in the State Office, and the cinema plant and engine for £250 in the Victoria Office.
