The extent to which married women are employed as teachers was revealed in a return tabled in the House to the order of Mr A. W. Hall (Reform Member for Hauraki). The return stated that there were 311 married women employed by Education Boards and five by the -Education Department in Native schools. In addition the boards employed 98 widows as permanent teachers, and 28 married women as relieving teachers. Those figures did not take in cases iri which a husband and his wife w£re ' both employed There were 13 such cases of marriec women teachers employed by boards and 88 of married women employed by the department in Native schools. The return stated ■ that the number of teachers reported by education hoards as being out of employment was 26. of which 16 had not applied for employment.
