BISHOP OF WAIAPU

UNIQUE FAMILY RECORD. By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) NAPIER, Oct. 10. The Venerable Archdeacon Herbert vVilliams to-night was unanimously elected by a special Synod ,of the Waiapu Diocese as Bishop to succeed the Rt. Rev. Dr W. W. Sedgewick, whoes resignation takes effect on December 31st. Archdeacon Williams is the third member of his family to hold that, high office. His grandfather, Rt. Rev. William Leonard Williams, was Bishop of Waiapu from 1894 (following Bishop Stuart) till he died. It is a happy circumstance that his son should lie chosen to fill the same post, thus completing three generations of episocopal duty, surely a unique record for any family. The three Bishops were also united in another respect. They were all Maori scholars, and all in turn laboured at the work of Maori lexicography.
