INDIGENT MAORIS
SQUALID POVERTY. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association). PUKEKOHE, Oct. 8. Conditions of a squalid nature prevail at the Maori Pah at Teruahine,. an isolated settlement near Tekawhata, acording to Coroner 0. K. Lowrie, who has just returned alter conducting an inquest there. '>•
Three Maoris died there suddenly. ! he whares where the Maoris lived ate described as totally unfit for human habitation. A young, unmarried Maori woman of 17 years gave birth to ,-a. male child, which died four hours subsequent to birth, the mother succumb-, ing two days later. Another child, four months old of a different family, also died.
It was stated at the inquest that neither a doctor nor a nurse was summoned, because the Maoris did not realise that the patients were seriously ill, and furthermore, the Maoris were in poor circumstances, and could njot afford to pay for medical treatment. A verdict that death was due to natural causes was returned.
