FOUND DEAD.

HAWERA, October 7
The body of Charles Richard Kelly, a widower, 66, employed as a metal tally clerk by the Haw era County Council, was found lying at the foot of a 200 feet cliff on Oliacwc beach at seven this morning. Deceased lived alone in a wlmre near the beach and was in the habit of occasionally proceeding to tlie cliff top to see whero the metal contractors were working on the beach. It is surmised that lie was making such an inspection last evening or early this morning when lie slipped over the edge. The body bore no evidence of serious external injury, death apparently resulting from shock. Deceased was the oldest son of the late Sir Charles Alymer Kelly, of Dublin.
FOUND DROWNED. CHRISTCHURCH, October 7. The body of Edward Maginness, aged 51, a married man, was found in the Heathcote River at St. Martin’s, this afternoon, after dragging operations had been carried out by the police. Maginness \Vas employed as cashier for the Kaiapoi Woollen Cov. He was missing from his home since early this morning, when his hat was foundJn the Heathcote River. STOWAWAYS. CHRISTCHURCH, October 7. Two s stowaways were on board the Karetu when she arrived from Sydney this morning at Lyttelton. They were discovered in 'the coal hunkers the day after the ship’s departure. One is a Now Zealander and the other is a Swede. The police took them in custody at Lyttelton.
MOTOR FATALITY. CHRISTCHURCH, October 7. Charles Annett, a shepherd, aged 49, residing at Timvald, was fatally injured in a motor car accident on the main south road this afternoon. He died on the way to Ashburton Public Hospital. Annett suffered a fractured skull. His son Percy, aged 15, now lies in the hospital with head injuries. Annett’s car collided with another car at an intersection. A NOMINATION.
CHRISTCHURCH, October 8. The Professorial Board of Canterbury College nominated for 1929 scholarship, P. L. Soljak, who graduated last year here and is completing his M.A. degree at Auckland. A METEORITE. rn . CHRISTCHURCH, October 8. Burning with a terrific white flame and roaring with a noise that shook the tower, a meteorite, flashed within a stone’s throw of God ley Head Lighthouse at twenty to seven last evening. The lightkeeper, T.. B. Smith,,and his family received a severe fright. Smith told-a reporter last night that the roar of the*aprpoaching, meteorite attracted his attention. The meteorite came from the south and was going almost due north, descending at a steep angle. It seemed to stop flaming before it reached the sea. AN APPOINTMENT. PALMERSTON NORTH, Oct. 8. From numerous applications the Borough Council last evening appointed Leslie D. Lovelock of Palmerston North, as Town Clerk. Lovelock lias been for several yeans on the clerical staff of the Palinertsou North Borough Council.
FALL FROM TRAIN. WOMAN PASSENGER'S DEATH TIMARU, October G.
Mr« Leahy, wife of Mr D. P. Leahy, c i of the Court at Waimate was killed through falling from the platform on the north-hound express at St. Andrews about 4 o-clock on Saturday afternoon.
Mrs Leahy was seen standing on the platform, and swaying as though sick. She was observed to fall shortly after and the train was stopped. The unfortunate woman was picked up unconscious and died shortly afterwards. Her husband is at present in Hamilton, where he has been transferred, making arrangements to take up residence there.
