During a furious storm betAveen the (sth and 7th of October the coastal steamer Haakon travelling at ttvelve knots Avas speedily sunk off Horoe, Avhen she crashed at half tide into a rock, so violently as to throw info sea Captain Michael Stoem, avlio Avas alongside the pilot on the bridge. The captain struggled on to the rock Avhence lie was rescued. About 'forty passengers and crew Avere drowned and sixtynine Avere saved.

The. survivors relate that it was a very dark night. Many Avere in bed and the electric light failed. Numbers of night clad passengers rushed to the deck to find the steamer turning turtle. There Avas no panic despite the fact that soon the boAV Avas the only part of the vessel above water. This Avas crowded Avith a feAv passengers Avho had not thrown themselves into the AA-aves. Some reached the shore scrambling Avith torn , hands and feet along the adjacent reef. LONDON, October 7.

Among the heroes was a Bergen business man, Daniel Nunn, who despite injury rushed below and smashed the saloon door. He then dragged out seven people. Fifty- took refuge on a small rock whence they were gallantly rescued, despite great peril, by the Norwegian steamer San L.ucar. Twelve third class passengers who were trapped in their cabins were also saved.
