RUSH TO REGISTER. [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, October 4. The unemployed registrations today numbered 161 in Wellington, bringing thei total to 719. On Monday • the total Dominion registrations were 2466. By Wednesday afternoon the total had increased to 3728. The figures for principal centres for Wednesday, with those for Monday in parenthesis, arc as follows: Auckland 1055 (812), Wanganui 73 (23), Wellington 558 (274), Christchurch 777 '(611), Dunedin 3/9 (181). S.'S. NGATORO. STRANDED AT NAPIER,
NAPIER, October 4. The steamer Ngatoro, coal laden from the West Coast, ran aground in the inner harbour at Napier this morning. It is hoped to refloat the vessel at high .tide. NAVAL EXPENDITURE. WELLINGTON, October 3. A deputation from ithe Navy League congratulated the Prime Minister on his reply re the Singapore base, and expressed the view that while npt opposed to disarmament it wanted to see the security of the Empire assured. V ' * ;gir J. Ward, in reply, said he believed that the present negotiations between Mr MacDonald and the President of the United States would lead to a general understanding on the question of disarmament. If they could come to terms it was certain Germany, France, and Italy would be invited to join. It was his conviction that reduction in armaments would follow the meeting in . New •York. In the meantime he thought they would have to play a waiting game, instead of stepping in and conveying New Zealand’s views to the English Government. He warmly appreciated the reference to his attitude re the Singapore base.

Within a few months, the exact date cannot yet be estimated, the permanent survey of the Coastal route for the completion of the South Island Main Trunk Railway will be finished. Already (the site for the line has been definitely fixed over a large . section of the country but there still are some portions to be done. ROMANTIC LEGACY TO A CHILD. HAMILTON, October 4. Romance surrounds a bequest of £4OOO received by Bubbles Jcnkinson, the fifteen year old daughter of Mr S. J. ' Jenkinson, of Hamilton,- under the will of the late Mr W. B. Carmichael of Sydney, the w r cll known newsprint merchant. Mr Carmichael thirteen years ago met the little girl when she was visiting her grandmother at Auckland. He took a great liking to the child, and whenever he visited New Zealand showed ' h'ej’ an affectionate interest. For years the old gentleman and the little girl exchanged letters am’ photographs. When lie died recently he left her £4OOO, or. condition that the money is held in trust until- the beneficiary is 21 years of age.
MIRAMAR FLOODS. WELLINGTON, October 4. A committee appointed to inquire into the damage by floods at Miramar reported that no blame could he at tributed to the City Council’s staff. Several members of the Council were not satisfied with the finding, and said witnesses would not give names of workmen, so that they should not lose tlicir jobs. They stigmatised the report as merely whitewashing the employees, but the Council adopted it. DR CHEEPING TON MISREPRESENTED. HAMILTON, October 4. Bishop Chcrrington, in an intei\]iew with the “Waikato limes, explains that in regard - to his protest funds, his reference to “robbing the against sales of work, for church poor,” was simply a facetious allusion to the prices paid hv generous purchasers.
