WHEAT DUTIES
THE INQUIRY.

WELLINGTON, October 2
'At the (Select Committee of the House of Representatives to-day inquiring into the sliding scale of the wheat duties, Mr Rushworth, M.P., evidenced that, on behalf of the Auckland Provincial Branch of the Farmers’ Union, he was-opposing the protective duty, and suggesting a subsidy on the ground that the duty, direct or indirect, caused the prices of flour, wheat and offals to he higher than would otherwise be the case.' Answering questions, he said that the twheat farmers need assistance. He would givedt direct on each bushel sold. -
R. G. Cathie evidenced, on behalf of the Wellington Grain, Seed and Produce Merchants Association, advocating a free entry into the Nortli Island of fowl wheat, bran and pollard, and a reasonable protective tariff to growers of milling wheat. Any action taken with regard to the imposition of duties should tend . towards making growers more self-re-liant.
