Seven of the murderers escaped justice by committing suicide; eleven others were arrested, tried, sentenced, and banged. This happened in the most populous city in the world, and in a country where one can practically procure alcoholic drinks any hour of the day and night. Next to London, the biggest and most populous city in the world is New York. The American metropolis has a million and a half inhabitants less than the British metropolis. In New York in 1927 (the figures for 1928 are not yet available) 282 murders were reported. Not one of the murderers committed suicide a hundred of them have not been apprehended, the othors have been tried, a large number of whom have been acquitted for want of proof, and less than, half a dozen sentenced and excut ed!”
