President Hoover, having issued a peremptory demand that the Senators who have been declaring that Washington is one of the “wettest” cities in the United States, should produce evidence, Senators Howell aiid Brookhart to-day replied to him in the Senate. They instanced certain Clubs which have served liquor under the protection of the former Prohibition Commissioner also describing a dinner attended by Senators in a prominent hotel at which liquor was served. Senator Howell asked that General Butler who several years ago cleared up vice conditions in Philadelphia should be put in charge of prohibition enforcement in the city of Washington.
