ORANGE SHIPMENT

ARRIVES IN BAD CONDITION. AUCKLAND, Sept. 23. About 50 per cent, of the recent shipment of approximately 8000 cases of Cook Island oranges brought by the Waipahi has proved to be in a sweaty and mouldy condition, and heavy losses have been sustained by the importing firms. The high percentage of loss is attributable to the lateness of the season and consequently the over-ripe state of the fruit. Several- thousand cases of rejected fruit have been sent by one city auctioneering firm to the destructor. Prior to the arrival of the shipment, oranges were in short supply at the city markets, and the small quantities now available will necessitate increased prices. Owing to a misunderstanding in the instructions, a consignment of fruit from M nuke Island, it was stated b> the Union Steam Ship Company today, was picked fifteen days before the Waipahi arrived.
