STOWAWAY ON AORANGI

AUCKLAND, September 23

A well-dressed young man, George Clifton, a salesman and native of England, was arrested on the arrival oi the Aorangi from Sydney this morning on a charge of stowing away at Sydney last Thursday. He later appeared at the Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to the charge. The police and purser of the vessel stated that Clifton was found in the ►second-class quarters of the Aorangi only yesterday. He admitted that it was his intention to work his passage to Canada' Accused only had 14s lOd on him when arrested.

Clifton asked the Magistrate for a chance so that he could look '.for work. This was refused, Mr Hunt stating that there were too many men stowing away lately. Clifton was fined the amount of the fare, v £B, in default 14 days gaol. ARBITRATION ACT. PAHIATUA, September 23.
