The Reefton Jockey Club’s programme for the midsummer meeting which was approved last n’ght, provides for an increase in stakes from £1505 to £I7OO. The classes -of each olf the two trotting events were fixed at 2.23 for the mile and 3.30 for the one mile and a half event. It was agreed that the Prime Minister be asked to give every facility to the passage of the Gaming Amendment Bill. An application was received from the Rev. Father Seymour, asking that the privilege for catering at the midsummer meeting be granted to him on behalf of his parishioners, in order to raise funds for the repair df the earthquake damage to the Murchison Church. The application was deferred for further information.
“This is not merely lip service,” said the'Minister of'Health (the Hon. Mr Stalhvorthy) in'" declaring in the House of Representatives that he intended to do everything in his power to improve the salary and working conditions of nurses. Showing that lie had been animated by that desire from the beginning of his Ministerial career, Mr Stallworthy said he had con term ended an order so that nurses could secure their pay in good time last Christmas. • He had been engaged in constructive methods ever since being in office to secure better conditions for nurses. Active steps were also being taken in regard to nurses in St. Helen’s Hospitals, his object being to secure an eight-hour day, one day a week clear, and such other amenities I as were possible having regard to the' exigencies of the service.

The amount of coal, timber, etc. transported through the Oiira tunnel last week was 13,540 tons, an increase of 1170 lons compared with the amount handled in the corresponding period last year, and increase of 3760 tons compared with the same period in 1027.
The booking for the tourist season now opening is said to be promising of a busy season. Some parties of Americans are booked through to the Glaciers before the end of tile year. About Christmas time there will be the usual holiday rush. A large walking party from Otago is coming through to explore tho Weheka country. For next month about the Labour Day holiday, many motoring parties are arranging to go south.
The members of the “Kip Van Winkle” opera party leave by the afternoon train at 4.40 o’clock- to-mor-row for Greymouth where the opera will be produced by request in ,the evening. The party will return by special train after the performance. Refreshments will be provided at the Opera House for the performers. Railway tickets will be procurable at the station here prior to departure, from the business Manager. , ;
Work on the Dorothy Falls road at Lake Kanieri has been well advanced of late. At present the workmen are hnishing off the present section in hand, and in about a fortnight’s time it will be ready for motor traffic. Slips are being cleared, and the minor water courses are being culverted so that motor access to tho end of the present -section will be easy. Before another section can be put in hand an
exploration of the route ahead and a survey require to be made.
A very large number of people motored to Lake Kanieri yesterday. The highway is in greatly improved order. A party of ■motor cyclists who went up in the forenoon climbed'to the top of Mt. Tuhua, and in the bright sunlight a magnificent view of the Wetsland panorama spread before them. The outlcok from the hill-top (3688 ft.) is a remarkably fine oiie, and the tramp which can he done in about three or fours hours, is now becoming very popular.' i • T • ■* *
Several members of tlie District Acclimatisation Society visited the Lake Kanieri hatchery yesterday afternoon. The weather was all that could be desired for such a trip. Everything was in first class, order at the hatchery, and the visitors expressed gratification at the condition cf the fish under treatment.' Over half a million ova were put down this season, and there is going to be a high .percentage of fry. The first fry will be ready for liberation very shortly, and it is hoped to despatch the first consignment to Greymouth in about a week’s time. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea at Mrs Tulloch’s tea rooms. Lake Kanieri was in one of its most attractive moods yesterday, and the whole scene backed by the snow-clad range being most picturesque.

The Allan Wilkie Company arrived this morning from Greymouth where they completed a very successful five nights’ season on Saturday night. The Company present “The Merchant of Venice” at Princess Theatre to-night.
The death took place at the Grey River Hospital yesterday morning of Mrs Elizabeth Howie, wife of Mr William Howie, of Roa. Deceased was 48 years of age, and is survived by her husband and family.
The death occurred yesterday of the general manager of the Government lourist Department, Benjamin Marins Wiison, aged. 59, after a few days’ illness, from pneumonia. He was born at Tuanies.iand was appointed to head of the Tourist Department fifteen years ago. Prior to that he was secretary to several Ministers., ;.
