HOKITIKA MENTAL HOSPITAL
(By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, September 20. Special conditions at the Hokitika Mental Hospital were referred to in the House to-day by Mr Jas. O’Brien. He said that some time ago a patient at the hospital had written to him, complaining off the food served out to the patients. Mr O’Brien read the menu of the food supplied to the patients, and he suggested that the Minister should consider the question, with a view to giving the patients something better than they were receiving at the present time. He suggested that a little variation should be introduced into the menus. Mr O’Brien also referred to escapes from mental hospitals, and said that several patients had escaped from the Hokitika Hospital, and had caused alarm in the vicinity. Hon. Mr Stallworthy said that he would he very sorry if an impression got'abroad that the patients of the hospital were not properly .fed. He had visited the institution,, and had meals with the patients, and was satisfied that they were given nourishing foods. The escapes of patients were very rare, and he thought that there was very little to complain about.
