NORFOLK ISLAND TRADE

AUCKLAND, -Sept. 19

The proposal by the Government to withdraw the motor-ship Maui Pomare from the Norfolk Island service was severely criticised at a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce Council. Fetors were expressed that Auckland’s trade with the island, which had grown to large proportions since the Hinemoa instituted the service several years ago, would be lost entirely.

It was stated that at present the Government refused to accept shipments from Niue Island and Samoa by the Maui Pomare for Auckland direct, goods having to be consigned to an “unknown destination.” Strong exception was taken to the fact that it was proposed that Auckland should be deprived of the Norfolk Island trade for the benefit of commercial Ration, s between Niue Island and Samoa and southern ports. Letters protesting against the proposal were received from seventeen local firms. It was decided to write to the firms concerned in the Island trade stating that the Chamber would take up the question. A deputation is also to visit Wellington.
