Stopforth’s.—Advt. /■ At this week’s meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association at Christchurch, in connection with the grant recently made by the canteens fund board applications were received from the Temuka, Ashburton, Timaru and Hokitika Associations. It was decided to make these branches a grant for the relief of unemployment in their various districts. It has been arranged to pay the amount through the Hokitika Borough Council, which, will subsidise the local grant £ for £.

At a meeting of the Executive Committee df the Nelson branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union a letter was read from the Hon. H. Atmore advising that the request of the deputation which waited upon him asking that the Government guarantee is 6d a lb on butter fat to the Murchison dairy factory suppliers for a period of three years had received the careful consideration of the Government, hut it was regretted that the request could not be complied with.

A Christchurch paper states a plug and a half of high explosive were picked out of a coal scuttle by Miss.Hockly, of 71, Holly Rood,'St. Albans, on Friday. The cylindrical-shaped packages were found by Miss Hockly when taking coal out of the bucket for the fire. The manager of the State Coal Department states that Samsonite, the explosive found, will not explode when burned, but a man who has handled Samsonite states that it can be detonated by a light blow. The police have taken charge of the plugs.

Twelve forty feet steel joists,, each weighing 3000, pounds, have arrived in Greymouth, Hour for the Waiwhio and eight for the Canoe Creek bridges on the Greymouth Punakaiki road. The contract for the supply of hardwood for these and other bridges has been let, but the County Engineer expects that it will be two months before the material .comes to hand. Meanwhile tenders will be called' for the building of the concrete abutments for four other bridges on the seme road, so thatwork can be carried on as soon as the hardwood arrives. •
It was suggested by Mr W. Ryan at a meeting of the West Coast. Rugby League Centre at Greymouth on Wednesday, that the new.ground at Coal. Creek, which is now in the course of preparation for playing upon next season, should be offered to the authorities ns a landing and taking off ground for aeroplanes. The ground is level and a run of half a mile can be provided for, while the field is well sheltered from the weather. If required there is more flat- land adjacent to the football field, and it could be acquired for the purpose mentioned. The executive decided to intimate to the authorities that in the interests of the district the League Centre was prepared to allow the use of fits property as an aerodrome.

At a meeting of the Grey Hospital Board yesterday the Medical Superintendent submitted the following repox-t for the month ending 31st August:— Patients in at beginning of month: Hospital, male 62, female 38; 0.P.H.. 35, 6. ' The Matron of the Rewa Maternity Hospital reported as follows:—Patients admitted since 19th August, 20; discharged, 22; births; 18; remaining in hospital, 9 adults, 8 infants.
