SIX MONTHS EXTRA. x [By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 18. Reginald Eugene Seager, at present serving a sentence of two years for, breaking, entering and theft at Hawera, was charged with the theft of £4O in Auckland on March 14tli. He' pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months hard labour, eoncurrent with the former sentence. COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 18. Raymond Jack Vernon Elliott was charged in the Police Court to-day with breaking open post boxes in New Plymouth, Stratford and Waitara and the theft of mail matter. lElliott pleaded guilty to all charges and was committed to , the Supremo Court for sentence.
MOTOR-IST ACQUITTED. OF CAUSING DEATH. ' WELLINGTON, September 18. The charge against Frederick Charles Facer, a branch manager, df having negligently driven a motor-car on the Main Road, Upper Hutt, on August 10 last, as as to cause the death of Mrs Florence Alton, aged 63, by knocking her down, was dismissed by Mr E. Page, S.M., who held that the evidence for the prosecution was such that no jury would convict. He did not call the evidence for the defendant. Deceased and her sister were walking home along the side of • the oitumen track when Facer’s car pulled cut from behind another car to pass it. j.ne time was between lights, and deceased was wearing a dark making it difficult for the lights of Facer’s car to render her visible. Deceased had got almost home. She vas killed instantly. AN INQUEST. AUCKLAND, Sept. 18. An inquest Was held into the death of John JosepTT Tubberty, aged .16 months, who died in Auckland Hospital last night. The Coroner returned a verdict that the cause of death was pneumonia, following scalds accidentally received through upsetting a pot of hot tea. The mother of the child, Mrs Delia Tubberty, said that on the evening of September 4th, a pot of freshly-made tea had been put on the kitchen table. The child had been left momentarily in the room with a girl aged five. She heard the Clash of something 'falling, and a scream from the little„girl, and it was then discovered that the child had upset the pot of tea over himself. He had apparently pulled the table cloth partly off, at (the same time drawling the teapot from the table. ' The child was scalded on the left side of the face and body. She coated liis body with carbonate of soda and 'flour, and in a few minutes the child was taken cq the hospital.
ART GALLERY. CALLING FOR DESIGNS. WELLINGTON, September 19. The Board of Trustees for the National Art Gallery, Museum and Cam panile has drafted conditions and offeis premiums of £SOO, £3OO, and £2OO for designs. The amount available for each of three sections is £95,000, £75,000, and £15,000, but this will not cover complete structures which will have to be designed for additions later on. The amount for the campanile is only for the steel framework. The Coates Government gave a hundred thousand, on condition a similar amount was raised and this is practically in hand or promised, and the interest will bring it to the full sum before the buildings are likely to be started.
HOUSE BURNT. WELLINGTON, September 18. A fire on the Terrace severely damaged one house of eight rooms and injured another of fifteen, both belonging to Mrs Pearson. Insurance altogether is some £3,500.
