THE MILITARY BALL
The military ball held in the Soldiers’ . Hall last evening was one of the gayest social events of the season. • The hall held its record attendance for a ball, about 200 couples being present. The interior of the building was bright with the decorations, consisting in the main of festoons of cardinal and blue; the regimental colour. The crowded floor with the coloured “frocking of the ladies and the evening or military dress of the gentlemen, presented a very bright and moving scene.'v
The music for the occasion was supplied by Mr Albert Lawn’s gaiety orchestra of seven insbrumentAlists,’ and was responsible for the terpsichorean revels which resulted.' The ‘ programme was a medley of old aiid new dances, and never flagged. Visitors were present from various parts, including military officers of Westport and Greymouth. The visiting ladies hockey team from Ashburton were also among the guests. , The town and district were represented by a very large quotas of its yoiith and beauty, and the whole scene was one of- very pleasant animation, . j The officers of the 13th Regiment, with many, helpers, looked well after their guests, and the whole proceedings passed off most successfully. Supper for so large an assemblage was no small undertaking, there -being five or six sittings in all to dispose of the patrons completely. - Mrs Preston was responsible for the commissariat, which was ample in all departments, despito the sustained attack, while “neat-handed Phyllises” saw that all were well attended to. The arrangements seemed to be am- 1 ply complete in every respect, and the event -will go ;do\vn into memory - as-one of the largest, brightest and. best social functions held in the local hall, .- . I
The management is to be complimented on the general arrangements. Messrs Bleach and Hutchison were at the head of the committee, which must have felt amply rewarded by the pronounced success of-the', evening’s gathering. To-night a juvenile dance will be he’d in the Soldiers’ Hall as a windup to the annual function, when a large party of • cadets will be .present. This gathering is also, sure to be well patronised by, the young folk, and will add •to the record put . up. for the 1929 Military Ball. ri
