GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER, i Australian Press Association). (Received this day at 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. IS. In the Criminal Court Frederick Lawrence, 62, a painter, was charged with the murder of Mirian Werriman at North Sydney, on May 23, 1928. He was found guilty of manslaughter and .sentenced to seven years imprisonment. Lawrence who was adjudged unfit to plead at the original trial, had ever since been under Observation. The defence to-day was that the rifle was discharged accidentally.

A RELAY' RUN. MELBOURNE, September 18. St. Stephen’s Barriers have arranged a relay run from Melbourne to Sydney of 560 miles, comemncing today. The run is divided into six stages and will be. completed in seven days. LINER LOSES PROPELLOR. SYDNEY, Sept. 17. The American liner “Ventura” which was due at Sydney on Thursday from Suva, is reported to have lost one propeller. Therefore she will not be arriving before Friday.

N.S.W. LEGISLATION. ELECTIVE UPPER HOUSE. SYDNEY, Sept. 17. The New South Wales Parliament was opened to-day by the Governor, Admiral Sir D. de Chair. He announced in his speech that legislation would be introduced for reforming the Legislative Council, which is now a nominee chamber; and for the restoration of the Sydney City Council on an elective basis; at the same time dissolving the Civic Commission, which now controls the city. Other important legislation proposed is to prohibit mass-picketing and industrial disorder, while, in the event of the Federal Government evacuating the field of industrial arbitration, steps would be taken to amend the State Industrial Laws towards removing many disabilities which are now depressing industries. Proposals will also be submitted by the Government for the reduction of the taxation on companies and individuals.
