NEWSPRINT

CANADIAN MILLS VERY BUSY. The newsprint situation appears to be keenly interesting newspaper proprietors all over the world. There is no doubt that the prosperous condition of North American secondary industries has caused a large increase in newsprint consumption. The mafnufacturers are keenly seeking every possible new avenue for the disposal of their goods, and are using advertising space in the newspapers oil a scale almost without precedent. The effect of this is that the publishers, while not increasing their sales in any remarkaole way, have very considerably enlarged their journals. As against this, it appears that a good many new paper-mills have been established in Canada, and it is claimed on behalf of die publishers that the production of these has been quite sufficient to take care of the increased demand, with the result that newsprint stocks—which represented a huge accumulation a year ago—are still very large. But the newsprint manufacturers say that their stocks—which represented a huge accumlation a year ago—are still very large. But the newsprint manufacturers say that theh stocks are not abnormal, and that, genorlly speaking, their mills, in order to cope with the current demand, are running nearer to capacity than ; at any time for years past.
