FALSE BOTTOM

IN CHINAMAN’S BUCKET.

WELLINGTON, Sept. 12

A smart piece of work was accomplished by Customs officers, when an attempt was made to smuggle about £SO worth of opium. He delected a double bottom- to a bucket, the property of 4 ' Chinese passenger from Sydney by the Maheno.. About 10.15 a.m., when the Customs officer, Mr. Bolatid, was on duty on Queen’s wharf, near the Maheno, he became suspicious of the bucket, which was-part of the luggage of a Chinaman aodut 26 years of age, who was returning to Dunedin after a two year’s visit to China. The bucket, which contained a pair of men’s shoes, was scrutinised and its weight seemed to be greater than normal. The visible bottom was soldered in, as usual, so a .small crowbar was employed to remove the bottom. Between the false bottom and the real bottom of the bucket a flat tin was found, which on being opened proved to be full of opium. As a result of the discovery the Chinese was arrested. Chinese, when travelling in steamers, often carry a bucket in which to wash themselves and their clothing.
