SEA COAST ROAD
USED FOR, PASSENGER. TRAFFIC. . NEWMANS MOTORS LTD. LEAD * THE WAY. Messrs Newmans Motors Ltd., who were entrusted with the conveyance of the Canterbury Rugby football team from Greymouth to Westport, and return, blazed a new trail for passenger traffic yesterday, ■ when they brought the visitors by car from Westport by the new road along the sea front. The journey was carried through quite easily in three hours travelling'time, saving about two hours on the inland journey through Reefton. No difficulty was experienced in crossing the three unbridged rivers on the way, for which tenders have been let for the erection of bridges to cross them. Tiie road generally, in spite of being newly-constructed was reported to *be in very fair order. The scenery along the new route is stated to be very fine and that portion between Fox’s river and Punakaiki contains an exceptionally fine scenic gem with a great forest of nikau palms and the seascape at intervals. The party of 19 visitors were carried in two cars. A stop was made at Barrytown Hotel for dinner, host Dunn providing an excellent repast, the journey then being continued to Greymouth. At Fox’s River a tunnel has been cut leading to the site far the bridge, and this was used to escape from the tidal flow. There was not much water in any of the streams, which are workable at any time up to half tide. The new road promises to prove a very attractive one. The road is good and when the three bridges are completed, it will make the through run between Westport and Greymouth a much shorter one than that at present in vogue. . It is stated that from December Ist, Messrs Newman Bros, intend running regular passenger traffic from Westport to connect with the Christchurch express at Greymouth. The Christchurch visitors were loud in their praise of the beauties along the new road, and expressed their pleasure at the enterprise of Messrs Newmans Motors, Ltd. in enabling them to complete their journey through a different route to that made in the run to.
