A six-foct track is being opened up by the Public Works Department through the Buller Gorge from Murchison to Lyell. The track will follow the road, which was damaged by tlie earthquake.
Travellers by train on Monday are reminded that the new time-table comes in. force and that the outward trains leave ten minutes earlier than has been the custom in the past, except the Ross train, which leaves ten minutes later.
An octopus with a spread of tentacles of about sft was captured «m Sunday afternoon near Mount Maungamii Wharf., Taugangbi. The octopus was speared with a crowbar and dragged on to the beach, where it fought viciously before it was dispatched.
On Wednesday next at their mart, Messrs W. Jeffries and Co. will sell by auction, starting at 11 o’clock/ the whole of the stock in trade of Mr B. Lyons of Stafford, the goods having been brought to. Hokitika for the convenience df buyers. At 2 p.m. the furniture and effects will be sold. These comprise a fine upright piano (iron frame) by Lipp and Son, an excellent instrument, and the furnishings of a comfortable home; In addition three buildings at Stafford will be offered for purchase for removal.
At the Town Hall on Monday night at 8 o’clock, Mr Eric James, of Makuroa, will give a lantern lecture on South Westland Tours, embracing the trip across Haast Pass, and up the Coast from Martin’s Bay, via Okuru and Haast, to the Copland Track, and thence by the Fox Glacier to the Franz Josef Glacier. The admission is free, and a fine series of views will be displayed, including slides from the photographs lately taken by the Government photographers. All interested, both in the progress of South Westland and the development of the tourist traffic to that quarter, should make it a point of being present at the lecture..
Mr L. Cliffe Stanford, 8.A., who was judge at tlie Westland Competitions, left for Christchurch' this morning. Yesterday lie was waited on bv a number of the competitors who discussed matters of interest to them yerv keenly, greatly to the pleasure of Mr Stanford, who was delighted to find such a spirit prevailing. He considers it augurs well for the future of the Competitions in Hokitika. Mr Stanford has made several suggestions to the Executive of the Competitions So:-ietv relative to alterations and amendments to the yearly programme, and no doubt these will be considered fully by the Committee. While in the district Mr Stanford was afforded the opportunity of visiting Lake Kanieri, the electric dredge, and Rcss, where he saw the large sawmill of Stuart and Chapman Ltd. in operation.

After the Borough Council meeting concluded last evening the Executive of the Fire Brigades Demonstration Committee met, the Mayor presiding. The Hon. Secretary (Mr G. C'olea) presented the balance sheet duly audited showing the receipts totalled £648 7s 2d, there being a balance of £7 3s 6d, which had been donated by visiting firemen for a special purpose. On the motion of the Mavor, seconded by Supt. Mclntosh the balance sheet was received and adopted. It was resolved that the balance, £7 3s 6d. be handed over to the. Fire Brigade for the purpose of arranging for a' suitable memento in accordance with the desire of the donors. Mr Heennn moved a very hearty vote ol thanks to the Secretary (Mr Coles ) for the able manner in which he had carried out his duties. Seconded by Mr Mclntosh and supported by the I Mayor and carried. Mr Coles ae-1 knioledged the vote and the gathering I terminated with a vote of thanks t'> I the chair.

The annual School Fair in aid of the ground and school funds of Hokjtika District High School is announced to take place on Wednesday afternoon next. Donations will be gladly received.
