THE PRINCE’S TOAST IN BEER

“THE VERY BEST’’ TO 250

WORKMEN

LONDON, July 22

Two hundred j and fifty workmen each drained a glass of beer to the health of the -Prince of Wales yesterday when he opened the new building of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, in Kcppel street, Gower street, W.C.

And the Prince toasted them in return-also in beer.

When the Prince appeared among them, the men—all of whom had been employed in the construction of the building—were sitting down to d -liner in a marquee as the guests of Lord Melchett., chairman of the school’s board of management. They rose like one man when they saw who their visitor was and loured out a greeting. And with a common movement they snatched up their glasses of beer and held them aloft. “GOOD LUCK, SIR!” “Hcrq’s Jolly good luck to you, sir!” they cried. The Prince, snliling, waited until the last drops had disappeared. Then he took a glass of beer and ra sed it in turn. “Here’s the very best to von, boys!” he toasted them, and took a long drink. The men were wild with delight. “That’s the stuff, Prince!” one of them shouted. “Well done, sir!” yelled another. And all sang, “For he’s a jolly good fellow.” “Well, good-bye all,” said the Prince; then, “The best of luck fo you!’’ and he left on another great wave of cheering.
