FIGHT WITH WOLVES

WOMAN EXPLORER’S LONE ADVENTURE. BOMBAY, July 22. Mrs Olivia Cressy-Marcks, the British explorer, has arrived here after a journey through Europe and Asia. She left London last November for Lapland, where she procured reindeer and guides and set out in a native sleclge on a journey of more than I,OJO miles across frozen wastes. She eventually came near the Russian frontier and then had what she termed the most terrifying experience of her life.

She travelled alone 40 miles in the reindeer sledge to reach the camp of Russians , who were to take her from the frontier into R.ussia.

Half wafy to her destination she found she was being followed by a pack of wolves. The furious animals attacked her, and 'for three hours and a half she had to beat them off with a stick. The occupants, of the camp, as she neared it, saw the fight, but dared not cross the frontier.

They fired shots to assist her and she reached the camp, but broke down and became delirious. She was cared for until sbe recovered. Later she was looked upon as a spy and threatened with imprisonment, but in due course her credentials were established.

After leaving Moscow she crossed the Caucasus into Persia and thence travelled to Karachi and Bombay. She leaves for England by Saturday’s mail boat.
