STEALING AND FORGERY. TOWN CLERK SENTENCED. (Australian Press Association), SYDNEY, Sept. 11. Daniel former town clerk of Tcnterfield, was sentenced io seven years’ imprisonment on ten charges of stealing, and forgery and uttering. His council’s funds showed a deficiency of £7400. The judge described him as a dishonest scoundrel. The manipulation of bogus accounts which the Tonterfiold Council passed in good faith, resulted in the council being placed in financial difficulties. An audit revealed a series of audacious thefts. Following investigations by the Local Government Department and the police, a series of defalcations extending over seven years, and. involving it was anticipated, between £15,000 and £20,000, were revealed. The Aldermen of the council recently resigned. The deficiency led to the arrest of Daniel O’Gradv, i own Clerk, who was committed for trial on a charge of stealing. FIJI ELECTIONS. An earth tremor roused sleepers in the suburbs. There was a loud explosion followed by a rumbling and the rattling of windows and shaking of buildings.
