STEALING AND FORGERY. TOWN CLERK SENTENCED. (Australian Press Association), SYDNEY, Sept. 11. Daniel former town clerk of Tcnterfield, was sentenced io seven years’ imprisonment on ten charges of stealing, and forgery and uttering. His council’s funds showed a deficiency of £7400. The judge described him as a dishonest scoundrel. The manipulation of bogus accounts which the Tonterfiold Council passed in good faith, resulted in the council being placed in financial difficulties. An audit revealed a series of audacious thefts. Following investigations by the Local Government Department and the police, a series of defalcations extending over seven years, and. involving it was anticipated, between £15,000 and £20,000, were revealed. The Aldermen of the council recently resigned. The deficiency led to the arrest of Daniel O’Gradv, i own Clerk, who was committed for trial on a charge of stealing. FIJI ELECTIONS. SUVA, Sept. 12. ■Major Willoughby Tottenham has been re-elected to the Vanua Leva division'of the Legislative Council. SAILOR’S BRAVERY. ' SYDNEY, Sept. 12. ■ It is now revealed that V. Jarvie, of the steamer Paffinbarra, which went on the rocks near Port Stephens, risked his life to save his mates. With a. rope round his waist, he reached the shore on an upturned boat, which had been tom from the steamer’s davits, by the gale. He made the line fast to the shore, and. rigged a block and tackle, on which the rest of the crew and the captain were hauled ashore. VESSELS REACH SYDNEY. SYDNEY, Sept. 12. The steamer Corbago reached Sydney safely this morning, after a stormy passage down the coast. During the height of the gale yesterday, a bedroom steward named Edwin Chant, on the coastal steamer Pulganbar, was washed" overboard and drovmed. This vessel reached port this morning. During her voyage four head of’ cattle aboard were badly knocked abouh, and they had to be destroyed.

A LIKELY CONTESTANT. ( SYDNEY, Sept. -13..,,, .Doctor Nott. who defeated Mr Theodore, deputy leader of the Labour Party for Herbert, Queensland, in 1925, is likely to be chosen to contest the North Sydney seat against Mr Hughes. electoral rolls. SYDNEY, Sept. 13. It is reported 1 that the Federal election will be fought on the old 1928 rolls. The electoral authorities point ,out the lists have since been revised, and contain at least sixty thousand changes in. New South Wales, and undoubtedly the same applies to other States. The effect is that if the old rolls are used they may have an important bearing on the composition of parties. N.S.W. RAILWAYS. SYDNEY, September 13. The campaign to reorganise the Railway Commission has been advanced a further stage. 0. Brain (Assistant Commissioner) has informed the Premier that he is prepared to retire as soon as the resignation of the Chief Commissioner is effective. MELBOURNE QUAKE. MELBOURNE, September 13. An earth tremor roused sleepers in the suburbs. There was a loud explosion followed by a rumbling and the rattling of windows and shaking of buildings. No great significance is attached to the disturbance at the Observatory.
