SAVINGS BANK TAX

AUTHORITY REPLACES / RECEIPT. (Auckland Star.) A debit slip will take the place of a receipt as a withdrawal slip at the Auckland Savings Bank. This decsion was made by the trustees of the bank and its object is. to overcome the impasse created by the order of the Stamp Duties Department that withdrawal slips presented at private savings banks for amounts over £2 must bear a 2d stamp. There will be no great difference between the new debit slip and the pink form which is at present issued, but, by the phrasing, the depositor, instead of giving a receipt ifor money withdrawn, will present an authority that his account be debited. The wording of the forms at present used is: “Received from the Auckland Savings Bank” (the amount) “to be charged to my account.” On the new document, the wording will read: “To the Auckland Savings Bank ... I (we) here' y authorise you to debit my (our) account with ” (the amount). The new form has been certified to by the Commissioner of Stamps as being one that would be exempt from duty, explained the manager of the bank, Mr Clem Bartley, in announcing tbio decision of the Itrustccs.
