AUCKLAND, September 9,
Charence Levi Jackson, aged 26 was remanded to Ashburton on charges of obtaining £2 credit by fraud and failing to comply with a maintenance order in favour of his wile.
LEVEL CROSSING ACCIDENT INVERCARGILL September 9
A somewhat extraordinary accident occurred this afternoon. The express train from Invercargill to the north had reached the Ythan street crossing, when Mrs . Lawrence Ford, aged 72, who was proceeding across the. intersection, walked into the side of the engine, and was brushed aside. The train was at once pulled up. The injured woman was conveyed to the Southland Hospital, where she died this evening.
SAVINGS BANK DEPOSITS. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 9. Tne progress of North Taranaki and New Plymouth is shown by the fact that the New Plymouth Savings Bank deposits last week reached £401,000, last year’s corresponding figures being £2^,169. PROPERTY SALE. WELLINGTON, September 9. The property of Mr Philip Schneideman at the corner of Bond and Manners streets has been sold to Schneideand and Sons, Limited, the purchase price being £33,000. On the Manners street frontage this is equivalent to £IOOO per foot, which is said to be prooably , the highest price yet paid for a property in this locality.
CHINESE PREMISES RAIDED ■ AUCKLAND, Sept. 11.
The police last night made a raid on Chinese premises in Grey’s Avenue. They found the doors locked and barred but crawled through the fanlight and forced the doors to reach the upstairs room where they found a number of Chinese. A fire was burning in a kerosene tin and pipes for smoking opium and other utensils for smoking opium were in- the room. Jen Lum, the proprietor of the house, was fined £SO or three months’ gaol. Ah Ching,-Lome Long and Ah Jum were each fined £l2 10s or- one month.
SUFFERING FROM INFLUENA
WELLINGTON, September, 9,
Owing to an attack, of influenza, the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, has been confined to bed in his apartments in Parliament Buildings. His condition is not serious,. but every precaution has been taken and a doctor has been .in attendance over the week-end.
Although Sir Joseph is not allowed to see visitors, he has maintained an active interest’ in the routine of his office, and has dealt with important papers in the privacy of his bedroom. It is not expected that he will take his place in the House to-morrow. It is anticipated that, if the present rate of recovery (is maintained, Sir Joseph will resume his normal routine on Wednesday.
A LABOUR TROUBLE. CHRISTCHURCH, September 11
It is reported that grave dissatisfaction exists among the members! of th Amalgamated Engineers Union with regard' to the provisions of the new award. A conference was held last evening of representatives from all over New Zealand, and as a result, a deputation will wait on thri Minister of Labour shortly.
BURNED TO DEATH
DUNEDIN, Sept. II
Mnrv Mills, .o widow pensioner, aged 73, living by herself, was burned to death in her dwelling ' at- Gabriel’s Gully last night when the house was destroyed by fire. This morning the charred remains were discovered.

At the Court to-day, Kong Quin, a Chinese who was arrested yesterday for attempting to import opium into the Dominion, was fined £lcO or nine months’ imprisonment. Counsel said defendant, was poor but had fallen to temptation when it was suggested to him in China that he should bring opium to New Zealand.
